At Zebulon GT Magnet Middle, arts are an important part of the course offerings. Students are allowed and encouraged to pursue individual interests, so a variety of classes are offered to help students find their niche. For visual arts, classes include Exploring Art (which I highly recommend for 6th & 7th graders interested in taking more art classes), Ceramics & Sculpture, Drawing I / II, Painting I / II, Printmaking, and Advanced 2D Design (high school prep/ independent study).
I attempt to create a positive art experience for everyone. Students have a variety of skill levels, so I like to alternate challenging projects with ones that everyone can be successful at, but always try to keep it interesting! The only students who fail art are the ones who don't try! The North Carolina Essential Standards for Visual Art, which are the basis of classroom curricula for all subjects, are here. This is the list of 21st Century Skills students practice in the classroom to ready themselves for both future education and employment. Supply List
Students are REQUIRED to bring some of their own basic supplies to class:
pencil(s), eraser, spiral-bound sketchbook or a regular notebook will do just fine & can be reused in multiple art classes (**tape-bound sketchbooks - the kind with the black tape across the top- tend to fall apart very quickly with daily use) Connect To ZGTMMS

Charity Project: Students Rebuild
StudentsRebuild.org
I love having students participate in Students Rebuild projects. There is a yearly project co-hosted by a non-profit organization that address a problem somewhere in the world, with the purpose of making students more globally aware. Students Rebuild partnered with the International Rescue Committee and Global Nomads Group to help Syrian youth from conflict areas recover from crisis and grow into happy, healthy adults. For each pinwheel sent in, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $2—up to $400,000—to IRC’s Healing Classrooms program. Since the civil war began, nearly 11 million Syrians have fled their homes. Of those, more than four million Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries of Lebanon, Northern Iraq, Jordan and Turkey. Nearly six million children have been affected by their country’s civil war and on average, it takes 17 years for most refugees to return home. This means millions of Syrian children will likely spend most—or all—of their childhood as refugees. Funding generated by the Challenge will train teachers in special techniques to engage conflict-affected children with social-emotional learning opportunities and to create secure, nurturing learning environments. |
