Advanced 2D Design

Advanced Art will allow students who have demonstrated technical skill begin to explore their own interests. Students will complete 8 self-directed projects during the quarter in the students' choice of media. The GOAL of this course is to prepare students for advanced high school art classes by helping them build a varied portfolio and find their artistic voice.
Class enrollment requires teacher approval. Students must have already taken multiple art classes and be self-motivated artists. |
Example Project ListActual project list will be determined by class vote at the beginning of the quarter.Mini-Project 1: "Tiny Art" Due 2/4 Artwork can be any medium or subject, but cannot exceed 6" in any direction. Project 1: Ugly Due 2/14 Use the Principle of Design CONTRAST to create a work on art based on the theme "Ugly." Project 2: Beauty Due 2/28 Use the Principle of Design BALANCE to create a work on art based on the theme "Beauty." Mini-Project 2: "4-Square Observation" Due 2/28 Students will use a single object to create 4 observational drawings from different perspectives. Project 3: Memory Due 3/13 Combine the Principle of Design of RHYTHM with the theme "Memory" to create original art. Mini-Project 3: "St. Patrick's Day" Due 3/13 Students will create a work of art that is limited to shades of green in the medium/ media of their choice. Project 4: Up Close & Personal Due 3/27 Use the Principle of Design EMPHASIS to create a work on art that interprets the theme "Up close and personal." Mini-Project 4: "Design an Alphabet" Due 3/27 Students will design an original alphabet incorporating a chosen theme into the design of the font. GradingStudents will NOT have a daily assignment in this class. In addition to 4 self-directed major projects, grades will also include 4 mini-projects and a Studio Habits grade (daily effort, clean-up, taking care of supplies).

Students will consider what they think makes a difference in their world and submit a "Doodle for Google" entry. Students ReBuild
Students will create pieces to submit for the yearly Students ReBuild challenge. This year the theme is Ocean Conservation. |
This class is planned using the North Carolina 8th grade Essential Standards.
